I know, because I’ve been there. I’ve stared at my power meter convinced that hitting a certain number was the golden ticket to riding away from the pack. But here’s the truth I learned after years of racing, testing, and training at the highest amateur level: watts alone don’t win races. Smarter training does.

Who I Am and Why I’m Writing This
I’m Greg Boileau — Masters National Champion, lifelong racer, and author of Smart Training for Cyclists.

The Problem With Chasing Numbers
The cycling world is obsessed with FTP. If you’ve been around the block, you’ve probably heard the question: “What’s your FTP?” as if that number alone defines your fitness, potential, or race results.
But let’s be real.
• A 350-watt FTP doesn’t matter much if you can’t repeat surges at the 2-hour mark.
• Huge sprint power is useless if you’re too cooked to use it when it counts.
• And absolute watts don’t tell the full story — aerodynamics, weight, fueling, and tactics can turn a lower-watt rider into the winner.
Numbers are tools, not trophies. They tell us something, but not everything.

What Smarter Training Looks Like
So what does it mean to train smarter?
1. Context over obsession
Power numbers only matter in the context of the demands of your events. A time trial asks for something very different than a crit, and your training should reflect that.
2. Physiology first
Every rider has strengths and weaknesses — VO₂ max, glycolytic power, durability, fatigue resistance. Understanding your physiology is far more valuable than chasing one magic number.
3. Durability and repeatability
Races are rarely won on the first climb or the first sprint. They’re won by the rider who can keep going, repeat efforts, and still deliver when it matters most.
4. Fueling and recovery
A perfect training plan won’t work if your nutrition, sleep, and recovery are a mess. Smarter training respects the body’s limits and builds resilience instead of constant burnout.
5. Mental game and tactics
Power doesn’t win if you miss the break, botch positioning, or mentally give up when it gets hard. Smarter training builds confidence and race-specific sharpness.

The foundation of my approach is the SMART system:
• Specific: Training should match the demands of your goal event.
• Measurable: Use data, but use it in the right context.
• Achievable: Progress builds step by step, not in hero workouts.
• Relevant: Focus on what actually matters for your racing or riding.
• Time-bound: Training should fit your season, your life, and your recovery rhythm.
This framework has helped me and countless riders I’ve coached unlock performance without chasing empty numbers.
